Stress And The Workplace: A New Paradigm

As the pressures of the economy increase, stress and the workplace gets worse. It hits at every level of employment. Upper management has the stress of keeping the company afloat. Middle management has the stress of doing more with less. Line workers and research have the stress of putting out the company’s product or service to an increasingly hard to please market. And this doesn’t even touch on stress of your co-workers!

The usual bromides about stress management are to meditate, take a break, relaxation techniques, and stuff like that. These techniques do work, if your goal is to reduce your internal reaction to external stress. They can make you feel good, for a little bit. But what if you could eliminate the stress? What if you actually looked forward to the stressful situations that used to cause fear in you?

As the world and the workplace become more complex, a more robust method of dealing with stress is necessary. This new method would enable you to look behind the stressful situation, and transform stress into an opportunity for growth. To do this, it would have the following elements:

1. Using your creativity to defeat stress. Creativity is probably the strongest weapon against stressful situations. Using creativity, you can come up with more options than just the “fight or flight” reaction to stress.

2. Using goal setting and time management to control stress. When you are in control of the situation, you feel less stress. By improving your ability to set goals and to manage time, you eliminate the stress of lack of time and lack of focus. You also take charge of the stressful situation.

3. Managing your energy and emotions to bring maximum power to bear on the situation. Learning how to draw on your internal energy will allow you to fight the strongest stress with your strongest power. Controlling your emotions keeps you focused.

4. Self feedback to improve your stress-fighting ability. Using feedback and self-examination techniques that you develop, you will be able to see what techniques work best for you, or work best in certain situations.

5. The attitude and goal that stress can be transformed, not just managed. Stress management and even stress relief are not enough. By adopting this aggressive mindset, you can use these techniques, or really any technique you prefer, to attack stress, instead of just taking it.

Using the same old paradigm toward stress will get the same old results. Some relief, but also the expectation – and stress – that stress will return. No control over the future, so no ability to predict when stress will hit. Time management that is limited to scheduling, as opposed to actually managing the time you live and work in.

The solution is not to try one more technique. It is not to follow the latest guru to preach peace and joy. It is not to think that feeling good means actually being stress free. The solution is to develop a mindset and a set of skills that attacks stress, with the intention of transforming stressful situations into opportunities for growth. Because your body and your mind will react positively to opportunities.
